On the surface franking machines are rather expensive. A new machine will cost you at least £1,000 to buy, but can be rented for as little as £14.99 a month. Similar printer and photocopier models cost far less, sometimes as little as £100.
So why do franking machines cost so much more than other similar printing devices? The answer is twofold:
- Franking machines actually do a lot more than a basic printer. All models now include a weighing scale and an electronic interface. So a direct comparison with these other machines is not entirely fair.
- More importantly franking machines are expensive, because they are very tightly regulated by Royal Mail. In the UK only 4 companies are authorised to manufacture the machines and a handful more are able to service them. Lack of competition means higher prices.
Moreover, the initial price of your franking machine may not include mandatory annual servicing and definitely does not include postage. So why would anybody choose to buy or rent one?
To put it simply it simply, despite their high price franking machines can save you and your business a lot of money and time.
